Camera Memory Cards: SDXC, SDHC and SD
When it comes to your digital camera, it can be all too easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of different memory types on offer.
Your camera’s LCD display will always tell you how many images you can currently save, but if you shoot raw files, you will always need more space.
A faster memory will not allow your camera to shoot at a faster rate. However, it will allow you to save images faster, allowing you to shoot a longer burst and reducing the delay before your camera is able to start shooting again.

Understanding digital camera memory
There are plenty of memory types to choose from when it comes to digital cameras, and the type you need will depend on what camera you have and how old it is.
For example, Compact Flash memory is the oldest form of memory card still in use, which is rarely found in beginner and enthusiast DSLRs. However, if you are using a top-end professional camera, it may use this type of memory.
Most people will be more familiar with SD cards, which are currently the most common memory cards used in cameras, and are used in most ranges except for the aforementioned top-end professional models.
If your camera does not use SD cards, then you may have the newer type of SDHC cards which only work in in SDHC-compatible cameras, or the even newer still SDXC, which again will only work in SDXC -compatible cameras.
Finally, the super-fast XQD format is designed for high capacities and is thus far only available in professional standard cameras such as Nikon D4.
Choosing your digital camera memory upgrades
It’s easy to figure out what kind of memory your camera uses by checking your user manual. However, you can also get higher-capacity memory for your camera that may not be mentioned in your user manual, as the manual will only list the memory sizes available at the time your camera was released.
