Apple 1 Computer Up For Sale On eBay

Want to get your hands on a true piece of computer history? Now is your chance, because a fully-functioning Apple-1 Personal Computer has been listed on the online auction site eBay. It’s not going to be cheap, though, as the current auction price is over $79,300, and there’s still more than a 8 hours left before it ends. In any case, if you’re willing to shell out the dough, this is one opportunity that you won’t see again.

Dubbed the “Copson Apple-1” by its current owner, the Apple computer up for auction is one of just 50 known to exist. It’s become one of the most sought after collectable computers in the world, and for good reason: the Apple-1 is the first line of computers produced by Apple. If you watched the movie Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, you may recall Steve Jobs building computers out of his garage. Well, the first computers he built were the Apple-1s, one of which is now being auctioned on eBay.

In case you were wondering, the Apple-1 Personal Computer being auctioned originally retailed for $666.66 and was purchased by Joey Copson more than three decades ago. It remained in the Copson family up until Bob Luther, who was writing a book on the Apple-1, came across it during his research. Luther struck a deal with the Copson family, agreeing to purchase it for an undisclosed amount.

The Apple-1 is listed as 01-0022, which according to MacRumors.com, indicates that it could be an earlier build than the original Apple-1 computers, adding further value to this piece of computer history.

My whole life, I’ve been a treasure hunter. Growing up in the 1970s, I often made my discoveries through the local newspaper classified ads,” wrote eBay user auctioncause2. “Ten years ago, a tiny classified ad in the Washington Post for a sheriff’s sale indicated the auction would include the first Apple computer. I was able to purchase that 1976 Apple-1, which led me to write the book The First Apple. My book research included tracking down friends of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who’d worked in the home and garage of the Jobs family in the beginning days of Apple.”

10% of the auction proceeds will go to the ALS Association – the only national nonprofit organization whose sole mission is to improve the conditions for people suffering from Lou Gehrig s Disease and ALS.
